Cycling Patrol and Web Application Boost Security
Residents have been given awareness that working together with the authorities by channeling information is a means to prevent crime. Recently, the State Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department launched Tuesday the Crime Prevention Friendly Cycling Patrol Campaign and the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) in together with the fasting month.
Kota Kinabalu mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai, who officiated the ceremony at the police headquarters, said that the police and the public need to work with each other for the security of the city, adding that crimes happen due to the negligence of the people themselves, as some studies show.
The Crime Prevention Friendly Cycling Patrol campaign is a joint bicycle patrol of the auxiliary police, City Hall, Amanita and other groups which will focus on public places and residential areas that are identified as crime-prone places.
Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) free to download
The VSP is a new innovation of the Royal Malaysian Police which gives the people a means to provide information or complaint needing police assistance. This application is a free downloadable application at the Play Store using smartphone. The App is available for Android and Apple products and can be downloaded on the respective platforms.
Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines Bring War Against Terrorism into Cyberspace
The foreign ministers of Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines had a trilateral meeting in Manila Thursday where they were able to come up with a 15-point proposed action plan against terrorism in cyberspace. The plan includes stopping terrorism and related content on the Internet, especially on social media, preventing and controlling exploitation of terrorists of information and communications technology which is also used to spread terrorist messages, stopping terrorist financing and improving cooperation among the three countries to look into the root causes of extremism, such as poverty, illegal drugs, crime and social injustice.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman of Malaysia, foreign minister Retno Marsudi of Indonesia and the foreign affairs secretary Alan Peter Cayetano of the Philippines represented their respective countries during the meeting.
Rare Display of Light Pillars Seen
A rare display of light pillars were seen by a group of photographers Wednesday night. Colors of orange, red, green, yellow and white lit up the sky at around 9 pm in Pulau Kelambu and started to fade in the early hours of Thursday.
Light pillars usually occur in the colder parts of the earth when natural light bounces off from flat ice crystals floating close to the ground.
This phenomenon was last seen in Kota Kinabalu two years ago and in Sabah’s east coast in 2006.
Air Seoul Still on Asian Routes
Air Seoul, Inc., one of South Korea’s budget carrier, said Thursday that it will continue flying Asian routes to achieve growth in its operations. Having started its operations eight months ago, the airline serves eight routes to Japan, and three routes to Southeast Asian cities – Manila in the Philippines, Siem Reap in Cambodia and Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia.
In a press conference, Air Seoul President and Chief Executive Ryu Kwang-hee said that there are no plans to fly domestic routes because they are taking advantage of the growing demand on international low-cost travel. In fact, they are planning to add flights to Guam and Hong Kong and two routes to Japan in the later part of this year. They are planning to lease two more airplanes to start achieving their target of 15 airplanes in their fleet by 2020.
