School Launches Resource Center

Firefly Library of the SJK (C) Che Hwa Kelombong was launched Saturday.  This is the official name of the 1,500 square feet resource center of the school, which was previously located at the western firefly village prior to the approval of the Education Ministry for its transfer to the urban area.

OCBC Bank Kota Kinabalu Branch senior manager Stanley Yong said that the center is fully furnished, has air conditioning, four computers with internet connection and a projector and screen they can use for lectures.  The bank, which contributed its CSR funds for the completion of the school, will also be conducting trainings on banking and financial planning to the students.

Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCCI) president Datuk Michael Lui said that the school now offers its 600 students more space where they can read, study or conduct meetings.  Lui, a member of the school’s board of directors, added that books were from donations, among them the Chinese Consulate in Kota Kinabalu.

On November this year, the school’s computer center will also be launched made possible by the financial support of West Coast, Kudat and Interior Tire Sales Association.

Federal Government for ICT Improvement

Malaysia’s #YOUCANDUIT campaign was in Sabah Saturday and in the opening speech of Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, read by Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah, he said that they are working closely with the Federal government for the improvement of information and communications technology (ICT) facilities in the state.  This is necessary due to the new generation’s rising demand for ICT products which has consequently increased the number of entrepreneurs in this sector.  The eUsahawan and eRezeki programmes are opportunities to assist low-income families to become entrepreneurs in the digital world and improve their socio-economic level.

World Class Cruise Terminal to Rise in Kota Kinabalu

An international cruise terminal is planning to be developed by Suria Capital Holdings Bhd in Kota Kinabalu through its acquisition of 11.7 hectares of land from the Sabah government in line with Malaysia’s Economic Transformation Programme.  The company is still awaiting the letter of offer from the state government.

Furthermore, the company announced that draft titles for the subdivision of 9.3 hectares of Kota Kinabalu port land were already forwarded to them, an indication that they can start construction works probably in the last quarter of the year.  These properties will be for the Jesselton Quay project and the One Jesselton Waterfront project.

Stop buying fake medicines

Sabah Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai told consumers at the opening of the 6th World Pharmacists Day celebration in Sabah to stop buying fake medicines so that sellers of these products will eventually stop selling since they will have no more buyers.  He made this statement after his office received complaints that imitation drugs were being sold at ‘tamus’ and shops in the city.  He also encouraged consumers to be well-informed on the dangers of using these products.

According to State Health Department Deputy Director (Pharmacy) Mohd Samri Baharudin, the State Pharmacy Enforcement Branch is coordinating with the police, Customs Department and other local authorities for monitoring of unregistered pharmaceutical products at various entry points.
