Befrienders KK in Social Media

Befrienders KK has stepped up its efforts to reach out to more people in distress through social media.  In addition to the conventional Helpline Service and aside from being present in Facebook, Twitter and Website, it is the first centre in 169 centres worldwide to provide Befriending thru Whatsapp.

President Datin Sri Siti Rubiah Datuk Abdul Samad said that there has been a decrease in distress calls and increase in social media interaction.  This is due to the trend among young people who do not use the telephone anymore but rather express their emotions on social media.

On the other hand, she urged print media to downplay reports on suicides to prevent suicide contagion.  She quoted David Phillips, a South African-American sociologist who studied copycat suicides, that how a suicide is reported may trigger off contagious suicide.
