Cycle for Cleft
Charity Tour for Children with Cleft Lip and Palate Birth Defects
“Cycle for Cleft” is a charity tour to help raise funds for children with cleft lip and palate birth defects to undergo corrective surgery. Baldape Singh, Karam Singh and Gurdey Singh (also known as Sandakan Eagle) will cycle 1,500 kilometers across Sabah. In 2014, Baldape and Karam were in the headlines for cycling for two months and five days from Kuala Lumpur to Punjab, India. The three became good friends while helping Orang Asli villagers in Grik during the Kelantan flood disaster in early 2015.
The tour will start on December 1 at Kota Kinabalu and will pass through Sandakan, Lahad Datu, Tawau, Keningau and Kundasang. They expect to arrive at Kudat after 21 days, covering about 70 kilometers every day. A coffee table book, with photographs taken by Gurdey, will be published at a later date.
The host for this project is the Rotary Club of Likas Bay (RCLB), an organization that has been offering free corrective surgeries in Sabah and in other countries, particularly in Cambodia, for many years now. These procedures are so life-changing to the beneficiaries because they can chew and speak normally and are given the chance to be socially accepted. The project is looking for additional partners.
