Weak Earthquake in Sabah
A weak earthquake of 2.3 on the Richter scale was detected in Ranau, Sabah, on June 11, just after 5am in the morning. The epicenter was, according to the Meteorology Department, at 6.0 degrees north and 116.6 degrees east, 11km west from Ranau, where the tremor could be felt.
Some small aftershocks could be felt during the whole day, whereas the strongest tremor occurred close to midnight in darkness.
Climbing activities normal after earthquake
The climbing activities on Mount Kinabalu appeared to be normal, while it has been reported that some groups which intended to climb using Via Ferrata (iron road) path decided not to do so, due to security concerns.
Other groups of climbers who already reached the summit of Mount Kinabalu were reminded not to panic and immediately started their way down the slopes of the mountain.
