Lok Kawi Wild Life Park

The Lok Kawi Wildlife Park, also known as the Sabah Zoological and Botanical Park has become a popular tourist spot in Kota Kinabalu.. It is located along the Penampang-paper old road. The park is fully developed by the Sabah Wildlife Department and is a one of the most famous attractions in the town, especially among the locals.

It is named as a Wildlife Park but it is completely a zoo. The inhabitants of the zoo are the Borneo Pygmy Elephants, Proboscis monkey, Malayan tiger and some different species of deer. The area inside the park is surrounded by a lot of greenery. The park’s objective is to be an ideal destination for family outings and especially serve as an educational children’s zoo.

Officially, the Lok Kawi Park was open to the public, on 17th February 2007. It stretches over 280 acres area and is consists of two parts, the zoological and the botanical garden. Rubber trees and pitcher plants can also be seen here. This is a nice place to experience a jungle for those who have never seen a jungle before.

Experience the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park

The park has a children’s section where pygmy elephants, ponies and goats can be seen. Elephant-riding can be enjoyed every day by the children from 10:30am to 11:30am and from 3:30pm to 4:30pm.

The botanical side of the park offers the visitors to go jungle trekking along the botanical trail which is about 1.4km long. The entire botanical component is about 200 acres in size.

The most alive section here is the aviary where one can hear the singing of the mynahs, greeting the incoming visitors. Pigeons, parrots, eagles, egrets, hornbill and many more species of birds can also be seen at the aviary. This primate can easily be seen on any river cruise in Borneo, but this is one place which ensures the glimpse of Sabah’s and Borneo’s most difficult to spot jungle creatures. Sighting the animals is almost guaranteed here as the animals are being caged in not-so-large enclosure.

The zoo is an abode of a large number of animals. Proboscis monkeys, orangutans, gibbons, zebra, ostriches, sun bears, tigers, antelope, Sumatran rhinoceros and a ménage of lizards can also be seen here.
